Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
What is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at SBE?
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) focuses on small-scale, practice-oriented investigations that help faculty directly improve their teaching. The goal is to use your ‘research perspective’ on your teaching practices (i.e. problems and questions you yourself have about student learning), you systematically reflect in an evidence-informed manner on your teaching practice to promote student learning. The emphasis is not on general educational research and theorisation, but mainly on applying educational knowledge and theories in your own field.
SoTL projects at SBE are designed to be small-scale and manageable. You start by indentifying a problem or situation in your teaching that needs to be changed or addressed. You them study what others have done; are there good (and bad!) practice examples? What is known about what does and does not work for students within your discipline? After designing and implementing, it is measured whether your intervention/innovation has worked; whether the students have learned what was intended. Crucially, you share their experiences with others through i.e. department meetings, seminars, the educational festival, blog post, etc.
For example, you can test a single teaching method, test the impact of active learning strategies during tutorial meetings, try a specific intervention, investigate how targeted (peer-) feedback on assignments affects student performance, or evaluate the impact of a new assessment format. The aim is to undertake feasible projects that can yield quick and actionable insights.
what are the advantages of using the Sotl approach?
It gives you the opportunity to use your professional development hours to delve into a question about your teaching that you are facing and are interested in. By engaging with SoTL, you become more aware of evidence-informed aspects that are conductive to student learning in relation to education. It therefore enhances the quality of teaching and encourages innovation. An Important aspect of SoTL is sharing experiences and ultimately, it makes teaching even more fun and varied.
Eager to start? join the SoTL community
Currently, SBE’s first SoTL cohort is running. After this cohort ends, the Learning Academy will reevaluate and potentially offer it again. As soon as new cohort starts, this will be announced and communicated through SBE’s internal communication channels and our website.
What can you do to get started in the meantime?
If you are interested in starting a SoTL project, here are some steps you can take.
- Reflect on and identify a specific aspect og your teaching that you would like to improve
- Dive into literature. Read articles and books on teaching and learning related to your specific question and/or related to your discipline (you can find examples below).
