Assessment 4: Open-Ended Questions and Papers

Choosing one of the three elective workshops on assessment is mandatory for UTQ/BKO candidates, and we welcome all interested teaching staff to join us. About the course
Papers and open-ended question exams are assessment methods that are often used at SBE. However, compared to multiple-choice exams, correcting these types of exams is less straightforward and often prone to subjective decisions. Moreover, one may question whether student’s answers reflect their true mastery of knowledge and skills acquired during a course. Taking constructive alignment into account, this workshop addresses how to design and construct assessment tools that can objectify your decisions while grading.
Objectives
After completing this workshop, you will:
- Develop insights in how characteristics of open-ended questions trigger student’s response.
- Understand the role of open-ended question exams as assessment method in the assessment cycle.
- Understand how a taxonomy of open-ended questions can be related to your course objectives.
- Understand how an assessment plan and matrix serves as foundation for your assessment.
- Reflect on how student’s expectations about open-ended questions and papers drive their strategic learning behaviour.
