MENTORS & THE MENTORING PROGRAMME

FOR ALL TEACHERS CURIOUS ABOUT COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT

The role of Mentor

To ensure that the SBE Learning Academy is well integrated among the faculty, every department has appointed a mentor after a positively evaluated pilot. The role of mentor is focused around four areas:

  1. Onboarding of new faculty members
  2. Coaching and supervision in support of learning and development of colleagues (for example, by doing classroom observations and foster knowledge sharing, bringing together senior teaching faculty around certain themes
  3. Creating a bridge with the SBE Learning Academy
  4. Help foster a boost in the use of Canvas by helping colleagues with the basics, refer to the support bodies and collect insights and needs from their respective departments. (Temporary)

The approach and emphasis on each element differs per department, depending on their needs. The mentor meetings lead to many fruitful exchanges between departments.

The Mentoring Programme

SBE has raised its teaching quality standards over the past few years. This puts more demands on new faculty members, and on faculty members who experience quality issues with their teaching delivery or student coaching. In addition, it has been noticed that new faculty members encounter many practical issues when teaching for the first time, assuming that they quickly gain all necessary knowledge to design, manage and teach courses, but these require substantial insider knowledge of SBE’s work procedures. In order to improve tutor’s basic teaching skills (language, communication, interpersonal skills, attitude) and to enforce the teaching community, a mentoring programme is set-up. This programme is made available to all starting teachers, but participation might also depend on the teacher’s needs, or be made mandatory based on poor tutor score or advice from the course coordinator or department chair. The mentoring programme consists on an introduction meeting and face-to-face meetings with a mentor (from the same department or working at the SBE Learning Academy).
